HQ Capture: Record a Process Once and Get a Guide

2 min read Updated Oct 2026

Mac users who want to show HQ how they do something once and get back a clean video and a step-by-step guide.

HQ Capture is HQ's own screen recording pack. You record a process on your Mac from a company session. HQ saves your screen, your camera, and your narration as separate layers. Then the AI in that session summarizes the recording, trims it, places the camera, exports the video, and drafts a step-by-step guide for you to check.

What you need#

  • A Mac with Apple Silicon.
  • macOS 26.
  • Apple's Command Line Tools. HQ Capture builds its recording app on your Mac from source, so it needs these installed.

Step 1: Install the pack#

Open the HQ Capture pack page. You can copy the install command there and run it, or add your email on the page to get the in-app install:

shell
$ hq install marketplace:hq-capture

More on packs in Capability Packs.

Step 2: Record a process#

Open a session in the company the recording belongs to, then run:

shell
/record-process

Do the process the way you normally would and talk through it if you like. You can turn your camera and mic off if you only want the screen. When you're done, click Stop recording in the menu bar at the top of your screen. When you stop, the recording is saved to that company's recordings folder on your Mac.

Step 3: Edit by asking#

When you stop, tell HQ what to change in plain words, for example "cut the part where I said um." It makes the edit for you. The AI reads the transcript, the guide drafts, and still images from the recording, so you can keep editing by conversation until it looks right.

You also get a written step-by-step guide. Read it over and fix anything before you share it.

Privacy#

  • Recording, transcription, and guide drafting all run on your Mac.
  • Nothing is uploaded to any other service or shared with another company.
  • Recordings stay in the company's recordings folder on your Mac. They sync to your company's HQ files only when you ask.

For how company files and sharing work, see Permissions in HQ: Who Can See What.

Finding things in a recording#

Because HQ has the transcript and the guide drafts, you can ask the session about what you recorded, like "where in the recording did I open the billing page?"

Common questions#

Does it record my camera and microphone?

Only if you want it to. It records screen, camera, and narration as separate layers, and you can turn the camera and mic off.

Does it run on Windows or an Intel Mac?

No. It needs a Mac with Apple Silicon and macOS 26.

Can my teammates see my recordings?

Not until you ask HQ to sync a recording to the company's files. After that, it follows the company's normal permissions.

If you get stuck#

If the install fails, check that Apple's Command Line Tools are installed and that you're on macOS 26, then run the install again. If /record-process is missing after installing, start a new session. Still stuck? See The "I'm Stuck" Guide, or report it with /hq-bug.
