Messaging Grok Bot from Claude Code and Codex

3 min read Updated Oct 2026

Anyone who's connected Grok Bot to HQ and wants Claude Code, Codex, or their team to message it and hand it work.

HQ messages are one system for your whole team and all your AI tools. Once Grok Bot has its own HQ identity and wake-ups turned on, Claude Code or Codex can send it a message or a handoff note. Grok Bot wakes up on its own, does the work, and replies. You don't have to switch to Grok and prompt it.

Jacob walks through this in a video: How to connect Grokbot to Claude Code, Codex or any other AI agent through HQ Messages.

Before you start#

Connect Grok Bot to HQ first. See Connecting Grok Bot to HQ. If you connected it a while ago, Jacob recommends reconnecting, since the sign-in now offers the bot identity option below.

Step 1: Sign Grok Bot in as its own bot#

When Grok Bot connects to HQ, the sign-in page gives you a choice:

  • Sign in as yourself. Grok Bot acts as you, and its messages come from you.
  • Set it up as its own agent. Grok Bot gets its own HQ identity, so its messages come from the bot instead of from you.

Choose its own agent so you and your teammates can tell who sent what. Then:

  1. Give it a name. Jacob calls his "Big Boy."
  2. Pick the companies it can work in.
  3. Finish signing in.

Back in Grok Bot, it confirms it's signed in.

Step 2: Turn on wake-ups#

Wake-ups let Grok Bot hear about new messages and respond without you prompting it.

  1. In Grok Bot, say: "Please set up HQ wake-ups."
  2. Grok Bot creates a routine in Grok with a webhook, a web address HQ calls when there's a new message for it.
  3. If Grok asks you to open the routine and you can't click into it, say "Give me the webhook URL." Grok shows it as a link you can open.
  4. Grok Bot then gives you a key. Copy it, paste it into the HQ page it opens, and turn on wake-ups.
  5. Grok Bot sends itself a test wake-up so you can see it working.

To try it, ask Grok Bot to send you a DM. It shows up in your HQ messages from the bot's name.

A wake-up only tells Grok Bot that it has mail. The message itself stays in HQ, and Grok Bot reads it when it wakes up.

Step 3: Message it from Claude Code or Codex#

In Claude Code or Codex, ask in plain words:

  • "Check my DMs from Big Boy."
  • "Send Big Boy a quick hello."
  • "Send Big Boy a handoff note for this project."

Claude Code and Codex already know how to use HQ messages, so you don't have to set anything up on their side. Grok Bot wakes up, reads the message, and replies. Then say "Check the response" to read its reply.

Working on the same files#

Grok Bot and your local tools share your company's files in HQ. To hand Grok Bot a file, ask Claude Code to save it in HQ and send Grok Bot a note pointing to it. Grok Bot opens the same file and follows the instructions. It works the other way too: Grok Bot can save its work in HQ for Claude Code to pick up.

For a bigger handoff to a person or a bot, with access to the right files, use /delegate. See Sharing Your Work.

Good to know#

  • Grok Bot works from the cloud, so it sees files once they've synced to HQ. See the Sync Guide.
  • Teammates can message it too. It's an HQ bot like any other, so anyone in the companies you picked can DM it.
  • It only sees messages for the company it's working in.
  • The same approach works for other bots that run outside HQ, like Muse or OpenClaw. See Cloud Bots.

Common questions#

Do I have to keep Grok open?

No. Once wake-ups are on, Grok Bot wakes up when it gets a message.

Grok Bot didn't respond to my message.

Ask Grok Bot to send itself a test wake-up. If the test doesn't arrive, ask it to set up wake-ups again.

Can Grok Bot send me files?

Yes. It saves the file in HQ and sends you a message that points to it.

If you get stuck#

See The "I'm Stuck" Guide, or report it with /hq-bug. It packages the details for the team automatically.
